angelarts1 Store 12.00 Vintage Compact Volupte Animals 1920s 30s Eastern PersianTheme Auntie Mame Styling! This is an incredible vintage fashionista find!Done in brass with rich colors, this compact presents imagesof a Tiger jumping to kill an Antelope as colorful birds flit about…there areother images of exotic colorful birds present on a ground of white flora, fruit& fauna… an elephant with his trunk held high is ornately adorned andmingling with the birds. It has a dot border that reminds one of the edges of aPersian carpet design! The design is on both sides of the compact. The catches work fine, the original velvety powderapplication puff is present as well as the edge lining that keeps the powderfrom leaking. The mirror is missing. What an incredible history the company Volupte had!Volupte Inc. was founded in 1920 in Elizabeth, NJ producingcompacts and cigarette cases and jewelry using chromium-plated metal mesh. MarkSoldered on tag "VOLUPTE" It was purchased by Shields, Inc. ofAttleboro, MA in 1957 and Shields ceased operations in the 1960s.In the history of the Volupte label we find this ….“The small case size probably also explains why the othertwo shapes, the ‘Romanesque’ and the ‘Cathedral’ are difficult to find. Itmight also explain why collectors will find ‘Cathedral’ compact cases stamped‘Volupte’. It would seem that Shields sold the rights to his design to a rivalcase maker – Volupte – who manufactured the case as a souvenir of the EmpireState Building. Pretty smart thinking and it seemed to work because these compacts, with their crude, stenciled, paintwork are often offered for sale today.”“For compact collectors 1942 marked the end of Shields Incbut under Rosenberg’s management the Shields brand continued but as amanufacturer of men’s jewelry items. In one of those strange convolutedcorporate arrangements, and one not without a touch of irony, in 1957 ShieldsInc acquired the prodigious compact case maker, Volupte Inc. But, of course, bythat time the compact manufacturing industry in America was declining and wouldall but disappear a few years later. Happily for Shields Inc this was not afatal development and the Shields name would survive well into the 1960s withits line of men’s accessories and jewelry.” This info came from this website and there is so much info there, but eCRATER will not allow full links here so add dot com/2011/03 after blogspot to get the page. collectingvintagecompacts.blogspot Great source of info on vintage compacts!
